Screenshot of the Week #130: Floating Battlegrounds!

by on July 9, 2017

In an ironic sequence of statements, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds got postponed in the same day with the reassurance for a 6-7 months release. It’s still aiming for a 2017 launch but somewhat closer to the end of Q4. I don’t want to delve in this too much. Maybe this postpone is related to the Xbox release or maybe it’s just that expectations have clearly grown after 4 million copies sold. Surely with that much money the game can get better and the developers seem to be committed on making the best out of it (looking forward for a better version of the netcode!). An extended development period of a few more months can make all the difference. This year alone we got plenty of examples of how rushed releases can completely ruin games and possibly franchises.

Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds is in a very much playable state. I’m closing in to 400 hours of game time after the Early Access launch which it’s quite an impressive feat from my perspective. Games don’t tend to hold my attention for that long anymore. But having seen floating cities mirroring playable zones and some of the other amusing bugs, I welcome this delay. Let’s have online games release in a fully functional state again and not as hidden stages of Early Access!
